With more than 2.5 million acres of public lands administered by the US Forest Service’s Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, Bureau of Land Management’s Medford District, and the National Park Service’s Oregon Caves National Monument in southwestern Oregon, there are countless opportunities to get outdoors and enjoy the bounty our area has to offer!
The three agencies have teamed up with local businesses and organizations to provide just such an opportunity for the area’s fourth graders to get up to southwestern Oregon’s only ski area, Mt. Ashland, to learn and play in the snow on February 21, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. The event marks the first of multiple events coordinated specifically for kids who hold the Every Kid in a Park pass, which is free for every fourth grader in the Nation as part of an initiative aimed at getting kids outdoors to learn and play on their public lands (www.everykidinapark.gov). Mt. Ashland Ski Area and the associated Ski Hopper Tours, REI Medford, and Jackson County Search and Rescue are all key partners with the agencies, helping to provide extensive knowledge, food, outdoor gear, shuttled transportation from Callahan’s Lodge, and enthusiasm for the event, which will be open for 20 pass holders and their accompanying adult.
During the four-hour event, kids will learn basic snow safety, winter ecology (whilst on snowshoes!), how to measure snow, and the importance of snow to the area’s local water sources and watersheds.
The Ski Hopper shuttle will depart from Callahan’s Lodge at 9:30 AM, and will return people to their vehicles at the conclusion of the event. Shuttle riders are asked to park such that the parking nearest the entrance is reserved for Lodge customers.
Space is limited to 20 pass holders and one adult for each pass holder. Registration for the event is on a first-come, first-served basis, and closes February 18th. Kids must present their pass on the day of the event.
